When a player knocks, the other player has to turn all their cards face up and arranged in sets and runs wherever possible. If the player who knocks does not go gin, the other player can lay down unmatched cards by adding them to the knocker’s sets and runs – for example, the player can add the fourth card of equal rank to a set of three, or can add consecutive cards from the same suit to a run.

The opponent is not allowed to lay off any cards if a player goes gin.

When the player who took the third last card discards without knocking, and if the stock pile is reduced to two cards, the play also ends. If this happens, no score is recorded as the hand is nullified, and the same dealer is used for the next hand. Some people play that once the player who took the third-to-last card from the stock pile puts down a discard, the opponent is allowed to use this discard to go gin or to knock, but if the opponent does not do either of these things, then the hand is nullified.
