At the start of each hand, all Gin Rummy players but the dealer put one single chip into each of the eight areas, plus they put one in the bonus compartment located at the board’s center. The person who is the dealer puts two chips into each compartment. (Chips of different colors may be assigned different values).

The dealer passes out all cards in the deck, starting to his left, giving each player including himself one card and also dealing a dummy hand, which is dealt at the round’s end. It is not required that all players receive the same number of cards. The person who dealt can either trade the dummy hand for his own, as long as he is not holding any bonus cards in the hand he was originally dealt or auction the bad hand to the player that bids the highest. The only players permitted to bid for the extra hand are the ones not holding bonus cards. At Online Gin Rummy the chips that are paid for the extra hand are kept by the dealer. The Gin Rummy player who purchases the extra hand can play that hand only. The only one who sees the extra hand is the individual who plays it.
