Play commences with the person on the dealer’s left. The lowest card in his hand must be played regardless of its suit. Subsequently the player with the next highest card in the suit plays it, etc, until either the ace is played by someone or a card from the rummy hand is played. Following the completion of the sequence, the player who last played a card starts the next round by throwing out the lowest value card in an opposite-colored suit from the previous round. If he does not have a playable card, the turn defaults to the left.

At the start of each hand, all Gin Rummy players but the dealer put one single chip into each of the eight areas, plus they put one in the bonus compartment located at the board’s center. The person who is the dealer puts two chips into each compartment. (Chips of different colors may be assigned different values).

The dealer passes out all cards in the deck, starting to his left, giving each player including himself one card and also dealing a dummy hand, which is dealt at the round’s end. It is not required that all players receive the same number of cards. The person who dealt can either trade the dummy hand for his own, as long as he is not holding any bonus cards in the hand he was originally dealt or auction the bad hand to the player that bids the highest.
