Gin Rummy is one of the most popular variations of the rummy game, popular all over the world but mainly in North America and Canada. Gin Rummy is played with a 52 cards deck not including the joker card.
Gin rummy rules are pretty much straightforward and similar to other rummy game variations whereas it’s a card game based on draw and discard and points.
The game is played with 2-4 players and each player is dealt 10 cards and the rest of the cards is placed face down as the stock deck.

Much like other rummy game variations the in this game every player in his turn must draw a card either from the stock pile or from the discard pile and discard (throw) a card to the discard pile. Once the stock pile ends, the discard pile is reshuffled and becomes the new stock pile (the deck).
The object of the game is to create sets and runs (a set is three or four cards with the same rank for example: 5 diamond, 5 spades and 5 hearts ; a run is a sequence of same suit cards in consecutive order for example 4,5,6 of spades).
The best way to win the Ginrummy game is by going gin and melding all the cards formed in sets and runs on the table leaving one card for the knock (there’s a dedicated place for that final card). Unlike the Oklahoma Gin game version in which other players can then perform an undercut which is basically going gin leaving the last card with a lower value than the original player’s knocked card, in the GinRummy game a player who goes gin can never be undercut.
Other than going Gin the player can meld his cards if the total value of the deadwood (the remaining cards in his hands) are less than 10 points in value – this is called knocking and in this case the player risks undercut by another player with a lower deadwood or even gin. The player going gin will get 20 bonus points and wins the round.
The scoring point works as follows:
Usually the Gin rummy games works on elimination points and in this case the points are awarded negatively to the losing players whereas the winning players stay with the same balance.
There are online and offline Gin Rummy tournaments being held as the most famous is the world series of Gin Rummy by the Gin Rummy association, they hold tournaments in Las Vegas at least once a year since 2004 and the fact that Ginrummy became available online, made it even more popular for players from around the world.
